However to be able to properly do this, and counteract the teachings of this postwar generation, the main characters were made at ages of which the intended audience, children and young teens at the time, likely 13-19, as at this point their views on the world would still have time to be developed and could still be influenced by externalities such as this show. Gundam was conceptualised to do the complete opposite, the idea was to actual show the sheer brutality of war and how dark it truly was, not honourable, but despairing and dark. The reasoning for Newtypes being a thing, and kids being the main characters, from Tomino's Perspective, is that after WW2 many veterans in Japan instilled upon their children the ideal that patriotism for one's country and fighting wars were a good thing to do, and that dying for one's country is the most honourable thing anyone can do, especially being "subjugated" by the "american overlords." During the Gulf War, Many American troops attempted recruitment through media, with infamous such as Top Gun being used as the basis to make War appear Cool. It's nice that Gundam is moving towards the realm of realism, however, personally, I think most fans don't understand the intention that Gundam isn't some kind of Japanese Star Wars, there's a reason why they're not abandoning the child-soldier gimmick for other series, their basically finished with that for UC cause its so developed. So, does anyone else notice the slow but welcome trend? Am I the only one who likes it? Yes I know there are some moments in the original Gundam that had things like this but it appears to me wayyyy more often in the newer shows. We see Federation suits defending their carrier and the Pegasus class deploys weapons (Pegasus class have also slowly become more then We hold 4-6 suits and 1 big gun) as well as running fighter escorts. Now with Thunderbolt (Secret Zeon resistance submarine base got me beyond fucking excited) we see them making do with the suits they have. I loved Stardust as it highlighted side characters who weren't new types and they played key roles. Gundam for me is slowly becoming more Realistic (Yes still giant robots I know, let's take what I say with a grain of salt here) and I really like it.Ġ8th Team was my long standing favorite as it did not deal with new types and showed average soldiers in a real war. They show and talk about logistics in terms of needing more supplies, parts, suits, etc. We see action where suits don't just stand in the open and shoot but use cover. We see them talk more about infantry as not everyone is a Mobile Suit Pilot. Starting with Stardust memory when it was noticeable to now, they have focused more and more regarding realism in the stories. I have noticed a trend in UC (and other universes) of Gundam that they are slowly shifting towards having a bit more realism in them. So stop here if you haven't seen Thunderbolt or anything from UC specifically, spoilers approaching from Solomon.
